Planning
is well advanced and I will start this challenge on 4th April
2011 with a gentle ascent of High Hartsop Dodd. Most of my
time is currently taken up with fundraising, it is proving to be hard
work. |

Who
said High Hartsop Dodd would be a gentle ascent. This first fell was
a real test - cold, wet and very windy. Poor days
have been out numbered by some excellent weather. Highlight - standing
on Bonscale Pike above Ullswater on a glorious Sunday afternoon. Low
point - Caudale Moor in thick mist. The last 17 days have strengthened
my love of Lakeland and I look forward to returning in May and the
challenge of Helvellyn etc. |

A
long and tiring 3 weeks has seen the total reach 100.
Weather has been mostly poor with high winds most days. Highlights
include Helm Crag, Coniston Old Man & Illgill Head and sharing
8 days of walking with James Clower of MRDF. Low point must be the
very soggy walk to Armboth Fell. However have enjoyed exploring many
new fells. Now time to prepare for the big tops in the Southern Fells
and hope for some better weather. |

Another
long and tiring 3 weeks takes the total to 162. Weather
for the last 8 days was excellent with brilliant high level views
from Skiddaw, Blencathra and above Newlands & Buttermere. Prior
to that it was alternate days of rain mist and weak sunshine. I saw
nothing from Pike O'Blisco or Cold Pike and abandoned the climb to
Crinkle Crags and Bow Fell. I was due to meet up with friend Russ
but an injury sustained in Scandale kept him at home. Get well soon
mate! |

During
this recent trip I was guest of several generous and caring hosts
and very much enjoyed sharing some time with them. Thanks to you all
for your help and support. Now planning my assault on the remaining
52 summits, mainly in the Western Fells. |

Poor
visibility and rain with only a few clear sunny days have made this
a difficult session. However, the end is now in sight and I plan to
complete The Wainwrights by mid September 2011. |

Hurricane
Katia and lots of rain made this the most difficult session of the
entire project. Even the long awaited reunion with Russ had to be
abandoned due to Katia. Only 2 sunny days to remember, but what a
day on Red Pike, Pillar & Kirk Fell, just magical. Pity about
the lack of views from Gt Gable, Crinkle Crags & Bow Fell. More
than a week late, I finally completed The Wainwrights on
Haystacks on 22 September 2011. |

I
feel very fit and have survived the physical effort very well. I also
feel privileged and fulfilled to have spent so long in one of the
most interesting and attractive areas of our wonderful country. One
of Alfred Wainwright's famous quotations came when he first saw the
Lake District from Orrest Head in 1930 - he wrote "God was in
his heaven that day" and I certainly felt the same on those glorious
sunny days. However, there were times when it was more a battle of
survival against the wind, rain and hail than contemplating the wonders
of the landscape, but that is partly the attraction of the Lake District.
I am grateful to all my family and friends for their encouragement
and support and especially to my wife Linda for her dedication to
the project. We can now spend more time together as retirement approaches.
Thanks also to the hundreds of people who have acknowledged me or
stopped for a chat on the fells, we all share in the splendour that
is The Lake District. |
